The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Turns to Spencer Kobren and The AHLA To Tackle Women’s Hair Loss
Vikki Conwell’s piece in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Hair Loss: Getting To The Root of the Problem touches on the devastating reality of hair loss in women.
Forty percent of hair loss suffers in North America are women, yet this silent epidemic is frequently ignored by mainstream medicine, and until recently the mainstream media. The article discusses the importance of early intervention as well as some of the myths that surround this little talked about condition. The article also discusses ways for women to cope, including finding online support. The American Hair Loss Association recommends that women visit The Women’s Hair Loss Project www.womenshairlossproject.com

Dear American Hair Loss Association,
I’ve been experiencing hair loss now for the past 5 years. Now I am at the point that I want something done about it. I am not really into the surgical hair transplant procedure (I heard it takes time for the new hair to take hold). I am really interested in non surgical hair replacement. I heard once it’s there it’s always there, and that non surgical hair replacement has come a long way and is now using natural hair from people in Japan and China. Most importantly I hear that it is also undetectable. I would honestly put myself in 3v-4 of hair loss. Is there a way I can get information? Thank-you.
Sincerely,
Robert
Dear Robert,
Since you’ve been experiencing hair loss for only five years you are most likely in a good position to give medical treatment a try in an attempt to further stop the progression of your hair loss, and to perhaps regrow some of your hair. We suggest that you speak with your physician about getting a prescription for Propecia, as well as to make sure that you are indeed suffering with common male pattern baldness.
As far a non-surgical hair replacement, what you have heard seems to be incorrect. Non-surgical hair replacement for men basically consists of attaching a hair piece or hair prosthetic to the scalp using a bonding solution which is basically glue. This type of replacement can look extremely natural if matched and maintained properly, but it is not permanent and must be removed periodically both for hygienic purposes as well as for maintenance of the hair and the base of the unit.
Remember a hair piece is a hair piece is a hair piece. All companies basically sell the same products, so do your homework before purchasing a hair system. We recommend that you avoid companies that make you join a “club” and sign a long term maintenance contract. You can read more about non-surgical hair replacement on the AHLA site.

For the right candidate who chooses the right hair transplant surgeon, surgical hair restoration can be a life enhancing cosmetic procedure. However, never underestimate the importance of choosing the right surgeon. When thinking about undergoing a hair transplant procedure, consider the following:
Things to avoid:
- Avoid turning to the yellow pages to find a hair transplant surgeon.
- Avoid large chain hair transplant clinics who have achieved household name status simply because of their ability to buy the publics’ opinion through advertising. These large chain clinics are also referred to as “hair mills.” According to most experts in the field, the quality of the hair transplant procedure that is performed at these heavily advertised chains does not meet state of the art standards. Many former patients of these large chain hair transplant clinics complain about being ripped off and in some cases disfigured. Be very careful!
- Avoid choosing a surgeon based on the opinions of posters on internet chat forums. While there are a few well respected commercial hair loss websites, the unfortunate truth is that most have been infiltrated by hair transplant marketers trying to sell surgery to vulnerable hair loss sufferers.
Internet forums can provide a wealth of information and a sense community, but you must be cautious. Use these forums wisely and understand that you never really know who is posting and what their true motives are.
Things You Should Do:
- Understand the entire scope and possible pitfalls of the hair transplant procedure before even considering surgery. Take the time to read through the American Hair Loss Association’s surgical hair restoration guide, and do not rush into having a procedure.
- Exhaust all other AHLA recommended options before considering surgery. As straight forward as the hair transplant procedure may seem, it is still cosmetic surgery. As with any surgery there is a possibility of real complications.
- If you are a candidate for hair transplant surgery, make sure your surgeon is an accepted member of the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons. IAHRS members have met the most stringent professional requirements in the field of surgical hair restoration. The IAHRS provides a safe place to choose a qualified surgeon based on skill. IAHRS members are the only hair transplant surgeons recommended by The American Hair Loss Association.
Coffee Beans May Help Women With Hair Loss
Scottish scientists Bill and Iain Forbes believe that the healing properties of green coffee beans can help woman with thinning hair. Approximately 40% of the worlds hair loss sufferers are women, with the vast majority suffering with androgenetic alopecia, also known as common female pattern hair loss. Genetic hair loss can strike women at any age after puberty, and can dramatically effect the quality of life of those it affects.
Last week UK based Boots chemists, unveiled its “Expert Hair Loss Treatment Spray for Women.” According to the Boots company, clinical trials conducted at Glasgow University proved to significantly increase hair increase hair growth while improving the thickness of exiting hair. These trials found that 80% of women claimed to have improvement.
The American Hair Loss Association is being cautiously optimistic about the efficacy of this new product. We are hoping that further studies will be conducted in the UK and in the US that will enable us to better understand how green coffee beans can positively impact hair growth.
