Our culture is peppered with taboo subjects, things we just don’t discuss. Some of these are topics we only touch on with family while others are strictly for conversations with friends. Still more subjects may be considered unsuitable for mixed company. Then there are the topics that nobody discusses at all.
As our society grows older and wiser, we are slowly learning to embrace and encourage open discussions and to share our thoughts and feelings about the difficult obstacles in life. One such obstacle is hair loss. Yet we still have a long way to go in bringing hair loss into casual conversation in a meaningful way.
Suffering any kind of loss can be devastating. Hair loss is no different. Yet most hair loss sufferers remain silent as they go through the trying experience that hair loss incurs.
When one’s appearance changes drastically, there can be a profound psychological impact. Most people fail to recognize the challenges that hair loss sufferers face and most people who are suffering from hair loss refuse to talk openly about the experience.
For some, it’s too embarrassing. For others, it’s simply not an appropriate topic for discussion. Many people refrain from discussing painful subjects in any setting. Hair loss is one of those painful subjects.
In the video below, Spencer Kobren discusses the need for people to be more open about hair loss. He encourages hair loss sufferers to allow themselves a mourning period in which they recognize that they are going through a major life adjustment.
Noting that two-thirds of men start incurring hair loss by age 35 and that 40 percent of hair loss sufferers are women, Mr. Kobren points out that this is a relevant subject that affects a large proportion of our population.
Are you open to discussing hair loss? Whether you or a loved one is experiencing hair loss, make it a point to let this difficult topic into your conversations with people you trust. Building a support system through times of difficulty can help ease the pain and make the process easier to bear.

It’s difficult to find fault in a product’s effectiveness when the evidence is so compelling.
Yet the hair loss industry has been duping consumers for decades with photographs that tell stories of success but are based in nothing more than sheer and utter lies.
Nowadays, most consumers are aware of photo-retouching software and understand that images can be manipulated and touched up to resemble something other than reality. However, when an ad proudly declares that the photos haven’t been altered in any way, what’s a consumer to think? The photos must be real and therefore the product must really work!
Wrong.
Even without fancy software, it’s not difficult for photos to be taken in a manner that can mislead the public. Illusions are easily created through simple photography techniques such as lighting and angles.
The American Hair Loss Association and Spencer Kobren’s The Bald Truth radio program recently published a video that depicts how lighting and angles can make the same head of hair appear sparse and balding in one photo, but thick and luxurious in another.
Spencer Kobren explains that a flash can create shadows, which make the hair appear to be thicker, or the flash can be used to generate a glare that resembles a shiny bald spot.
This two and a half minute video will forever change the way you look at before and after photos and it will definitely affect how you make choices when buying products that promise to change the way you look.
Amazing, isn’t it? While this advertising trickery is rampant in the hair loss industry, it is common in many other industries as well. Please share this video with family and friends and help others become smarter consumers.

Two-thirds of American men will suffer with some degree of hair loss by the time they reach the age of thirty-five, yet the fact remains that the mainstream media and society as a whole still practically ignores the devastating emotional effect hair loss can have on the self esteem of those it afflicts.
The truth is no matter how society attempts to trivialize it, hair does matter for many and it can effect every aspect of the hair loss sufferer’s life. From interpersonal relationships to professional life, hair loss can color everything we do and the way the world reacts to us. With this said, many hair loss sufferers are extremely well adjusted and have learned to roll with the punches and of course thrive in life. For others however, it’s not as easy to deal with.
Enjoy the video and take it in the spirit that it is meant.
