Hair Transplant Do’s and Don’ts
September 13, 2007 | By admin
For the right candidate who chooses the right hair transplant surgeon, surgical hair restoration can be a life enhancing cosmetic procedure. However, never underestimate the importance of choosing the right surgeon. When thinking about undergoing a hair transplant procedure, consider the following:
Things to avoid:
- Avoid turning to the yellow pages to find a hair transplant surgeon.
- Avoid large chain hair transplant clinics who have achieved household name status simply because of their ability to buy the publics’ opinion through advertising. These large chain clinics are also referred to as “hair mills.” According to most experts in the field, the quality of the hair transplant procedure that is performed at these heavily advertised chains does not meet state of the art standards. Many former patients of these large chain hair transplant clinics complain about being ripped off and in some cases disfigured. Be very careful!
- Avoid choosing a surgeon based on the opinions of posters on internet chat forums. While there are a few well respected commercial hair loss websites, the unfortunate truth is that most have been infiltrated by hair transplant marketers trying to sell surgery to vulnerable hair loss sufferers.
Internet forums can provide a wealth of information and a sense community, but you must be cautious. Use these forums wisely and understand that you never really know who is posting and what their true motives are.
Things You Should Do:
- Understand the entire scope and possible pitfalls of the hair transplant procedure before even considering surgery. Take the time to read through the American Hair Loss Association’s surgical hair restoration guide, and do not rush into having a procedure.
- Exhaust all other AHLA recommended options before considering surgery. As straight forward as the hair transplant procedure may seem, it is still cosmetic surgery. As with any surgery there is a possibility of real complications.
- If you are a candidate for hair transplant surgery, make sure your surgeon is an accepted member of the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons. IAHRS members have met the most stringent professional requirements in the field of surgical hair restoration. The IAHRS provides a safe place to choose a qualified surgeon based on skill. IAHRS members are the only hair transplant surgeons recommended by The American Hair Loss Association.
